Virgin Drive (Toyota Dyna – Lorry)

Posted by lunnatic on January 10, 2008

Omigod! I just drove my cousin home with my sis as my navigator (and comforter / encourager) using my Dad’s lorry. Two young lives in my hands and heels. I swear I’m mad!!!

Main difficulties lie in the multi-storey carpark. Couldn’t get out of the lot initially because I didn’t gauge the lorry’s length properly. Can’t park when I got back, because I couldn’t see the back at all. In fact, I was trying to reverse park into a lot on my right side, which I’ve never done before because I was taught to park on my left side. Hahahaha!

But then again, I was taught directional change by reversing to my right, so I shouldn’t have a problem, right? Haha. Nahh, I cheated a bit with directional change in the circuit, so that doesn’t count. ;p In any case, the lorry has a DIFFERENT LENGTH!!

In the end, I cheated by parking forward into an empty lot, and reversing back into the lot I wanted. Hahaha. I’m sucha cheater. And it wasn’t even properly in the lot. Muahahahaha!

Also took a while before I got use to the sensitivites of the different pedals. The brakes, especially. Very sensitive, but strong. One idiot actually filtered into my lane VERY CLOSELY and actually stopped suddenly to pick up a passenger. WTF?! Good thing the brakes are good. Thank goodness I’m alert enough! Grrrrr.

The lorry has a speed limit of 70 km/h (or was it 60?), thus I didn’t go very fast along the expressway (PIE). Leftmost lane, about 60 km/h. Good thing there weren’t many cars on the road at night, making filtering along the expressway easy. My 1st journey along an expressway! ;p

As for the normal roads, well, I think I pretty much messed up all the traffic rules about turning into the correct lane at a junction. Hehehehehe. On the whole, I think I’m alright, just need to slow down A LOT MORE when approaching a traffic light.

Oh, and somehow it’s easier for the lorry to move off on the 2nd gear. I think it’s actually a norm for this lorry. There’s no need to use the 1st gear. I need to improve the charging up of the gears though. I have a feeling I’m changing gears too quickly, though I swear I felt and heard the difference in the engine that I decided to up my gear. But 4th gear when I just hit 40 km/h, hmm, not VERY necessary, I think. No?

Good experience, all in all. I should observe a little more closely when my Dad’s driving it. But aiya, don’t think I’ll drive it again because I can’t figure out how to learn the parking for this!!
